Favorite Things About Fall

It would be a tough battle between contenders Fall and Spring if I were forced to choose my favorite. But I'm pretty sure Fall would win out simply because it's the beginning of a long span of cool weather. As delightful as Spring is there is always the hovering menace of hot weather, the persistant presence of sunshine and, of course, tick season.

Today was the first day I really and truly felt Fall was on its way. It's cooler outside the house than in and when I opened the door to let Lucy out she paused and wasn't sure what to do. Even though her food was outside waiting for her she sensed something was off in the air and she stood in the doorway a long time pondering such an uncertain egress.  This will be her first fall season and I'm not sure she was thrilled about it.

My favorite things about Fall:
  • State and county fair season!
  • Cool weather (obviously)
  • Fall means it's almost Halloween, my favorite holiday
  • Fall means it's almost Thanksgiving, my second favorite holiday
  • The trees get dressed up in their fancy colorful fineries (followed by the subsequent "getting naked" after the party's over). Those shameless hussies.
  • Walking in the woods is the best in fall and winter. No ticks, no snakes and you can see the undulation of the earth through the naked trees.
  • Smoke in the air from fireplaces and woodstoves.
  • Knitting is way more fun in cool weather and I can break out the homemade socks and scarves!
  • Mulled cider

It's funny, because Spring is supposed to be the rebirth, but somehow for me Fall is when things seem more joyous, more alive, more expansive.

What are your favorite things about Fall?

  1. I love the richness of colours of autumn. The coolness of the nights. Being able to open windows and let the fresh air in especially at night. The lack of bugs! The smell of home baked bread and bowls of hearty soup.

  2. Fall is my favorite season too. I love the colors. I love the lower temperatures, especially because they contrast with summer temperatures. I love the feel of October on my skin.

  4. I love the feeling of Back-to-School. Even as an adult, Fall always feels like a new beginning to me. I also love pumpkin picking, pumpkin seeds, pumpkin candles and the smell of woodsmoke around the neighborhood. And lovely, comfy sweaters with jeans :) Thanks for leaving a comment on my blog via the BBQ!

  6. Football season! And being able to open the windows to let the fresh air into the house. The crispness of the air, and dare I hope, enough of a chill to put a rose in our cheeks. (as hot as it's been this summer, that seems an elusive dream.)

Thanks for visiting my blog from Karen's BBQ. OY! How in the world do you manage to run so many different blogs, lady?! Yipes.

  7. You don't live in the UK and that's a fact. I love spring with all those fresh pale green leaves and bursting buds and hope. Autumn (fall) for me means being even colder in the evening when I sit and watch the TV. I'm wrapped up now in thick woollies and socks.

  10. Fall is my favorite, too. But honestly, I love the days you can first smell the next season coming. I didn't get to experience that much in the city, but back in rural America, there's always one or two days during the transition periods between seasons where you smell the coming season on the breeze, and I love those days. I love that breath of change.

  11. Yes, I love Fall and walking in the crisp, beautiful leaves. However, each season has its beauty and I try to appreciate each and every one.

Sounds good, doesn't it? Well, truth be told, I only like about one week of winter, good days in spring, a moderate summer, and yes, a long fall of 68 degree weather.

  12. Fall is my absolute favorite.

Cooler days, for sure, are awesome, but I am insane for Halloween, pumpkin picking (and carving), colored leaves, sweaters and jeans!!
