Thanks for this insight into small town life, I've never lived in one. It will be a great reading assignment (fully cited, of course) for my ESL-English as a Second Language students, thanks.Starhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06350579051520505525noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2571590790949407117.post-14420268275879637382013-04-07T08:37:38.863-05:002013-04-07T08:37:38.863-05:00Yes, I think there is value in any community that ...Yes, I think there is value in any community that can establish some longevity. But Steve made an interesting point about friendships born of necessity as well. A community that is intimate that is not of your own choosing has an interesting dynamic. Sort of like being stuck with a brother or sister you don't always like!Wendyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03115002505324651653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2571590790949407117.post-58124779690568322612013-04-07T08:33:22.421-05:002013-04-07T08:33:22.421-05:00I think there is a great blog post in there, Steve...I think there is a great blog post in there, Steve. Your misdeeds of youth. I live downtown right now, so my kids have it easy as far as playmates, but when I was there age I lived on a little hobby farm next to a soybean farm. My best buddies were chickens and a snake-catching siamese cat.

I do think you are on to something about friendships born of necessity.Wendyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03115002505324651653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2571590790949407117.post-1509895832183389962013-04-07T08:30:20.074-05:002013-04-07T08:30:20.074-05:00I lived away from this for about 10-15 years. &qu...I lived away from this for about 10-15 years. "J9" made a point that in large cities you still have small communities, but there's definitely a difference. For many years I lived in towns that had 40,000+ populations and the communities were not the same. We chose them because of common factors, we created those communities for ourselves. It's hard for me to explain the difference but there is one. And, yes, I'm fortunate!Wendyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03115002505324651653noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2571590790949407117.post-16119346742988990552013-04-07T07:34:33.485-05:002013-04-07T07:34:33.485-05:00That is the life I used to know (even if I grew up...That is the life I used to know (even if I grew up in NY; every block was a small town) and also the way my children spent their childhood. The first couple of times the shop owner called her to confirm I was on an errand, after which it was easy to buy cigarettes for myself.

I grew up in a rural community so sparse that the boys I played with lived as far as two miles away. I watched it grow and develop until I had neighbors whose names I didn't know. Strange as it may sound (I experienced this in the army as well), friendships are more meaningful when born of necessity rather than choice.

Great post.
